Demo Fun
Not all may realize this, but a lot about being an indie musician is selling yourself. And honestly, it can seem a little unnatural-- submitting demos. You put a part of yourself out there for others to listen and critique, and sometimes they say "no". Sometimes they even say worse things.
There have been lots of nice highpoints in my music career of late, but this morning I found myself in a familiar situation-- having lots of demos and not knowing where to shop them. Receiving "no" answers in various shapes and forms, some due to heavy schedules, others because the music is "not their cuppa".
Interestingly, one of the main responses-- THE main response, in fact, is silence. No reply. You might find later on Last FM that the label indeed listened to the tracks, but they were not dedicated enough to reply to your query. This is true for big and small labels both.
Even with the headway I've made, I still only get confirmed for about 1 out of every 4 demos I submit. The most common answers are silence or "no".
Since I am not Ringo Starr, this will probably not change.
